Power plants

A  power plant is a thermal power station dedicated to generate mainly electricity.

Most power plants burn fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.

For coal-fired power station, the furnace heat converts boiler water to steam, which is then used to produce electricity.

Since there are stringent environmental regulations on SO2 emissions in many countries, SO2 is being removed from the flue gases after the boiler.

For a typical coal-fired power plant, LAB's Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) may remove more than 95 % or more of the SO2 in the flue gases by :

  • wet scrubbing using limestone, lime or sea water
  • semi-dry FGD using lime as reagent
